CYC HOOPS 2021
The CYC basketball season is here. Practices have started and we are looking forward to the start of the season on January 22nd. A lot has happened in the last few months to make this season a reality. We appreciate the hard work of our District reps and basketball directors to make this happen.
Each parish has a designated Covid contact person. This past week, we met with those folks to discuss the safety procedures for this basketball season. Everyone should know who that contact person is for your program.
As always, information can be found on our website at: https://playcyc.org/covid-19/
As with our fall sports, our office has created these safety guidelines with the help of our District representatives and parish volunteers. We have also consulted the Health Departments in St Louis city and the seven counties we serve. Our goal is to provide our athletes with a safe environment to play.
Basketball is different from our fall sports of volleyball and soccer. It is played inside, and basketball is a contact sport. Many of our gyms are small and cannot safely accommodate everyone.
Here are a few things we are doing this basketball season:
- Online screening and temperature checks.
- Masks required for everyone, including players.
- One spectator per athlete may attend.
- Games will use a running clock for two halves.
- Gyms will have monitors to help with check-in and adherence to rules.
Please go to our website to be clear on all our guidelines. If you have questions, please contact your parish Covid rep or our office.
We are the Catholic Youth Council. We expect our players, coaches, officials, and parents to act in the proper way. We know some of you do not agree with the safety guidelines. That does not mean you should voice your opinions to our volunteers. They do not deserve to be ridiculed or criticized.
During the fall season, we observed fans who chose not to follow the rules by not wearing a mask or bringing too many people to the game. We will not tolerate this for basketball. The risk is too great.
Everyone needs to remember this is for our kids. Yes, all of this is uncomfortable. The last several months have been uncomfortable for many, however, we have found a way to make it work for the better. We all need to make this work for our CYC athletes this basketball season.
We continue to pray for those adversely effected by Covid-19. May all our athletes and their families stay safe and healthy.
Have a great season!
